Don Heck

Don Heck is most famously know for his long run on early Avengers, and for drawing the very first Iron Man story in Tales of Suspense #39 (which was also his very first superhero assignment). He got his start in 1949 at Harvey Comics, and shortly thereafter drew all but two of Comic Media's 27 issues of horror titles: Horrific, Terrific and Weird Terror. During his time creating memorable stories at Marvel, Mr. Heck's wife passed away and it made for troubling times in his quiet personal life. While he went on to make contributions to many other Marvel titles and characters, including Spider-Man and X-Men, it was only in the last few years of his life that he'd even begun to realize his work had been so well received and recognized. Colorist Greg Wright took Heck to a Marvel party, where he received an outpouring of attention and affection from the modern superstars of the industry. Jack "King" Kirby was also an admirer of Don Heck's work, and considered him the best artist at drawing attractive women. It was Kirby's recommendation that led to Heck working on Batgirl and some Wonder Woman at DC during the early 1970s.
