Dave Cockrum

Dave Cockrum was born on November 11, 1943 in Pendleton, Oregon. As a gifted young artist and an avid reader of Blackhawk and Captain Marvel, Cockrum decided he wanted to draw comic books. After spending six years in the Navy, Cockrum landed his first job at Warren Publishing. Next he got a job inking backgrounds over Murphy Anderson at DC. He was shortly thereafter given a Legion of Superheroes backup story in Superboy, which rose to prominence during his one and a half year tenure on the book. Cockrum's next move was to Marvel, where he did pencils and inking on various books. It was there he revived the X-men by introducing the new team in Giant Size X-Men 1 and X-Men 94. The characters he co-created, including Storm, Nightcrawler and Colossus, rocketed the title to immense popularity - making X-Men an endurable and lasting phenomenon for over 30 years and running. After penciling the book for two long runs, Cockrum went on to work for other publishers, creating his own titles "The Futurians" and "Soulsearchers and Company". Cockrum also returned briefly to Marvel, penciling a limited series about another one of his X-Men creations, the Starjammers. In recent years, Cockrum's health declined due to a severe condition of diabetes. When his illness put him in the hospital and his family in financial straights, a huge outpouring of support came forth from the comic community in appreciation of his life and many contributions to the art form. A legal settlement ensued between him and Marvel as well, which reportedly will ensure that he and his wife will live comfortably in their retirement years.
